What is a giclee print?

What is a giclee print… and how is it pronounced?

Giclee is pronounced jee-clay or zhee-clay.

The fine art printing world uses the term today to describe the class of digital inkjet prints that are deemed museum-quality archival prints. A giclee print is simply a professionally made inkjet print made from a high-resolution digital file. It is the methodology and process of making a giclee that really defines it as a giclee for it is merely a well controlled digital inkjet print.

So, what’s the difference between a regular inkjet print and a professional inkjet print?

While it’s true that all inkjet printers are inkjet printers, not all inkjet printers can produce a print with the characteristics of a professionally produced giclee print. Professional inkjet printers use archival pigmented inks which are light-fast and fade-resistant resulting in prints capable of lasting over a lifetime under the proper conditions. These professional printers use 8-12 separate inks to produce an incredible color range in comparison to the typical desktop inkjet printer. For instance, Ink & Dot Studio’s Epson printer uses 10 separate Ultrachrome HDR inks at the same time. The inks in combination with carefully selected fine art papers makes for superior exhibition-quality prints. Prints made by this process are guaranteed by the manufacturers of the ink and the paper to make archival prints capable of lasting over a lifetime under proper archival handling. These large format printers are also capable of handling thicker media that a typical desktop printer cannot handle.
